Cydney Brown is a Philadelphia Youth Poet Laureate

In Philadelphia, a student named Cydney Brown is the Youth Poet Laureate. She has received a stipend of $1,000 and mentoring from Trapeta B. Mayson, who is also a poet and a former youth minister. Through her poetry, Brown hopes to inspire other young people to find their voice and to share their stories.

The Philadelphia youth poet laureate for the 2020-2021 year is Cydney Brown. She began writing poetry in fifth grade and was featured in various media outlets such as the Philadelphia Inquirer, 6abc, and the Citizen. Since then, she has spoken at different venues, including Benjamin Franklin Hall, Lincoln University, and the Ideas We Should Steal Festival. She has also won a National Hip Hop poetry competition. She is an active member of her community and is committed to ensuring that young people get the opportunity to write, read, and perform their poetry.
